This is the most important letter I’ve ever sent you. I want to tell you about something going on very close to my heart. The proposed Eagle Sulfide mine in the Upper Peninsula of my home Michigan poses a threat to every living thing in the Yellow Dog River watershed.

The company proposes to blast under a trout stream and through a sacred rock outcrop called Eagle Rock by the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community. Furthermore, the mine is proposed on public land and only 10 miles from Lake Superior. Kennecott’s project could pave the way to a metallic sulfide and uranium mining district throughout Michigan’s wild Upper Peninsula. The situation recently escalated with the unlawful arrest of local Big Bay citizen, Cynthia Pryor for “trespassing” on public lands, which spurred members of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community to occupy Eagle Rock.

I have written a new song called ‘Eagle Rock (song for the people)” and it will be made available for FREE to everyone. All I ask is you visit these sites, educate your self about what is going on and PLEASE make a donation to those brave heros who are holding off one of the largest and most egregious violators of indigenous peoples and our mother the earth.

THIS IS NOT A LOCAL PROBLEM IT IS A GLOBAL PROBLEM. Jessica Koski, a member of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community spoke at Rio Tinto’s shareholders meeting in London as were people from Calfornia, Madagascar, West Paupa, China, Namibia, Indonesia, and Bougainville Island. Please Listen to the song .. give it away and tell others what is going on. Please help me stand up for a river and the people at Eagle Rock!

Drew- My mother’s homeland of Sulawesi is similarly threatened by a $2billion dollar mining operation. Like the Anishnaabe here the Torajan, Bugis and other indigenous people hold that consider themselves a StarNation and the land sacred. Like the project here there is a trail of government corruption, lack of legal permits, no impact studies ecological or human and the immense forrest and agriculture downstream is poised top be similarly poisoned. I cannot go there but I will go up with you. Miigwetch for your song and stand…

PS- The company in question down under is Rio Tinto.

Thanks Drew for keeping us informed. This should be near and dear to everyones heart (expecially those of us in Michigan)! This affects us all!

I have only begun to see what has been in front of my face – our faces – for centuries. Blinded and drugged by dollar signs, these people (people?)are like robots. They see nothing and feel nothing for the land; it’s a commodity. Maybe the next compilation project should be original songs about the land with the procedes going to causes like these! Count us in!

    Drew,

Thank you for informing so many. As a Marquette-born, Munising-raised Yooper, I was aware amd have contributed to the Yellow Dog. It was my father’s favorite trout stream. As a community radio deejay (KVMR/FM Nevada City, California I have enjoyed and played some of your music on the air. Of course I recognized US2 in the first track of your recent cd and wondered if you also may be a Michigan native. I would love to play Eagle Rock on the radio. Please contact me and let me know how I can get a copy. Thank you for what you are doing. Larry

    Drew,

As I listened to your song, it drew chills to my body. They say one of the greatest gifts is to touch a heart and you have touched mine. Miigwetch for the beauty and wisdom you are passing on in your song. Take care, Pat

Miigwech to you and to Greg Peterson for the great articles I linked to yesterday on Keweenaw Now. Keep up your wonderful support of the brave people at Eagle Rock!

  26. Shelley Youngman

This song is powerful Drew. I am grateful to you for writing it, and for working on this issue.
I just had a thought: What if we get a group together and sign this song in Lansing for the governor?
We sure need this to be a state wide effort, and all work together to STAND FOR THE LAND.
    In gratitude.

  27. Shelley Youngman

I meant “SING” this song, not “SIGN” this song, but we could do that as well!

  28. margaret

WOW! From the heart…right to the tears in my eyes! Thank you for such an empowering gift!

  29. CW

I’m overwhelmed! Just yesterday I hiked on part of the woodland trail that Kennecott wants to use for hauling our treasures away! There were about thirty of us and we also walked on the North Country Trail leading off of the Woodland trail (as Kennecott calls it) with Steve Garske the botonist as well as others who are fighting Kennecott! Your song gives us a rallying cry! Thank You!!
