Conquering Britain, one folk festival at a time. Grand Rapids Press
Grand Rapids singer-songwriter Drew Nelson, who recently returned from his first-ever tour of England, Scotland, Ireland and Northern Ireland, can't wait to go back.
"It was great," Nelson told me last week, noting his agent already is booking a spring 2008 tour of Great Britain, with the possibility of shows in Belgium and the Netherlands. "I'm getting some really good radio play there which is pretty exciting."
Last month, Nelson spent 3 1/2 weeks in the United Kingdom, playing gigs on all but five days of that trip. He performed at folk festivals, folk clubs and pubs, and built an enthusiastic new audience for his original music.
Calling it a lifelong dream to perform in Great Britain, Nelson sold all 150 copies of the "Immigrant Son" CD that he brought along and was interviewed by TV and radio reporters while on tour. Not bad at all. And he's started planning for broader distribution of that CD in Europe.
Not only that, but he met a host of fascinating people along the way, sharing stages with the likes of Ian Briggs (who once played harmonica in the Yardbirds) and singer-songwriter Dave Sharp (formerly of The Alarm), and making a fan of well-known British journalist and political commentator Andrew Marr, who attended one of Nelson's concerts. Nelson said Marr, star of the BBC's "Andrew Marr's History of Modern Britain," bought four of his CDs following the show (though Nelson conceded he didn't know who Marr was until someone explained it to him afterward).
"People were all really friendly," said Nelson, who I must say, can now yammer on with a pretty impressive Irish and/or Scottish lilt.
